3D printing, in conjunction with the new cutting edge filaments which are becoming available, allows novel approaches which free designers and engineers to tackle previously insurmountable challenges in ways which were inconceivable in the past.
We have assembled a team with extensive experience in the polymer and chemical industries. Our chemical expertise and knowledge of materials has led us to develop new biopolymer products and related technology which allows us to provide new, industry specific, solutions related to 3D printing.
We are always keen to explore collaborations with representatives from different industries to work on innovative solutions to aid companies when it comes to their design, modeling and production activities.

We strive to minimize the environmental impact of our activities. The 3D printing industry is rapidly developing and expanding and we are aware that as the range of products and the scale of activity increases we must not lose sight of any potential long term consequences. Philament™’s products are made from biopolymers which means that, at the end of their lifecycle, the printed products can be recycled into filaments once again. Because our products are derived from eco-friendly, biodegradable raw materials it is even possible, under the right conditions, for them to be composted.
Philament™ products fulfill the requirements of the European standards EN 13432 and EN 14995. They are composed of PLA (Polylactic acid) which is itself derived from starch and sugar cane, and these biodegradable products decay within 1-5 years. PLA is proven to be compostable.
Greenhouse gas emissions
Although the greenhouse gas emissions associated with various plastics varies widely polylactic acid (PLA) is at the lower end of the scale. CO2 emission due to PLA is less than a sixth of that of ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) and less than a third of PET (Polyethylene terephthalate).
In 3D printing a plastic filament is fed into the printer which then produces the desired 3D shape. Although the principles underlying this technology are simple it is greatly complicated by the fact that most plastics are unsuitable for this as they do not possess the required properties. Fortunately there exists an environmentally friendly plastic which satisfies the industry’s requirements.
In addition to its environmental credentials this biopolymer, polylactic acid or PLA:
- is less prone to warping during printing
- yields a printed surface which is significantly smoother and glossier than that provided by other commonly used materials
- allows for the production of highly detailed printed objects
- is suitable for a broad range of applications
- near odourless, exuding only a mild, sweet smell.

The filament can be fine-tuned by controlling and adjusting the specific mix of additives used in the material. Hence the customer is no longer obliged to compromise when particular properties are desired. We are continually developing and improving our products to cater to an ever expanding range of applications.
